Abstract
Character is not something different from education in general, nor is it a subdivision of education. Rather, it is an emphasis, a philosophy, a way of looking at education.
My purpose in writing this thesis has been to carry to you the working truth about Character Education in a Democratic Country, as it appears to me, after several years' study and teaching of Character Education. I have tried to include that which is most important and interesting to you to know in order that you may school yourself and your children or pupils in the ways of the healthy mind and thus contribute to the character building program of the school and community.
In the summer of 1932, a letter was sent to the State Department of Education, indicating the problems under way and requesting catalogues or announcements of books published which might be considered for inclusion in the bibliography. I also gathered material from the library of Prairie View College dealing with Character Education in the Secondary School. The accumulation of material by these means was supplemented by reference to the cumulative Book index, and bibliography in books already known. The library of Prairie View College constituted the grounds of research. No book has been included which has not been examined personally by the writer who is responsible for this thesis.
The writer wishes to acknowledge the courteous co-operation of school officials and other individuals who have assisted in the compilation of this thesis.
