Abstract
Extracts of the adrenal cortex have been proven to be essential in the prolongation of life in the adrenalecternised animals. Thls fact was firmly established by the work of Hartman in 1927 (21). Between 1929 and 1931 Rogoff, Hartman and especially Swingle and Pfiffner (45) obtained these extracts by different methods. Numerous laboratories attempted to Isolate a pure crystalline substance from extracts of the adrenal cortex ; however, it was not until 1936 that Wintersteiner, et. al. separated crystalline steroids from these extracts (2, 30).
