Abstract

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROBLEM AND DEFINITIONS OF TERMS

In recent years research educators have shown that more emphasis is placed on the ability to solve problems, reasoning, and understanding, the problem-solving abilities need to be In a scientific age of placed above anything else because of the atomic age that boys and girls now live. Consequently, the ability to master the arithmetical problems need to be at its greatest level, The value of arithmetic and the meaningful procedures of problem-solving have been given more concerned in the last few years.

THE PROBLEM

Statement of the problem, This study was concerned with the problem-solving abilities of pupils in arithmetic in the low eighth grade of the Worthing Junior-Senior High School, Houston, Texas, and some of the difficulties involved.

The specific problems were :

1. To discover the areas in which students were having the greatest amount of difficulties.

2. To find the reasons for or sources of these difficulties.

3. To determine what could be done to improve the problem-solving abilities of these students.

Importance of the study. The writer feels that this study will give him an opportunity to gain more information concerning the problem-solving abilities of the students he is now teaching. This knowledge can be used not only to assist in instructing students who are presently enrolled out also those who will be taught in future classes. It is believed that this study may be helpful to its readers by pointing out the areas of difficulties and the causes for these difficulties It is also felt that the teaching techniques employed in this study are applicable to various grade levels in a variety of schools.
