Abstract
No subject has so engaged the attention of educators generally as that of the rural schools; this is perfectly natural. Agriculture Is the foundation of our national prosperity, and about half of our population is engaged In Its pursuit. One and all, in town and country alike, are concerned in whatever effects rural life, and a great many think that the rural school is the most important factor to be considered in this matter. This is one of the conclusions of the commission appointed by the United States Government to study rural life. This question is of special interest, for the most momentous period in history is approaching. How shall we as a nation prepare for that emergency? The number of boys and girls attending the elementary schools, if placed four abreast, would make a column stretching nearly across the United States, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. This is the army on whose efficiency depends the future welfare of our country. Not to supply these children with the best education we can give them, is to rob them of their birthright and to lower our national ideals. An attempt will be made here to discuss the problems in connection with the rural schools of my county; their status, and how they have increased their efficiency.
