Abstract
The story of the developing of the high school for Negroes in Houston is an interesting story . In the late eighties there was established on the corner of San Felipe and Frederick Streets in the fourth ward in Houston , Texas , a school which combined all the grades from the first to the eighth . One Mr. Hardy , at that time a prominent figure in educational and religious circles of the city was principal of the school and he had about three teachers to assist him . A small frame building stood on the spot of ground . In 1892 a real four year high school was organized and the traditional subject , Latin , algebra, geometry , and physics were added in English , History , and civil government .
