Abstract
Because of the increased emphasis on other aspects of development, physical education must take into account the impact of its experiences upon the personalities of children and youth. As physical education is interested in the total development, it must also be interested in the influence of its experiences upon the social and emotional adjustment part of the whole. Since modern physical education is made up largely of experiences in recreation, the problem which this research paper is concerned with is: What is the general influence of recreation upon social and emotional adjustment as indicated by research evidence? What are the implications of this research evidence for recreation?
The purpose of this study is to gain broad understanding of the influence of recreation upon social and emotional adjustment and to translate these understandings into implications for recreation.
