Abstract
This thesis is concerned with the study of errors in the written compositions of Prairie View College Freshman students.
The problem of English usage is found in all of the classes of the College. This study has been made in an effort to strengthen some of the weaknesses of the present freshman class, and finally those of the entire student body in usage.
Many of the students have come from schools in which they got very poor foundations in English. Upon entering college it is revealed by the administration of placement tests that there is a great need for improvement in English usage. After having taken a course in usage for one semester some students show no signs of improvement, while others show sign of improvement, and still others make lower marks than they made on the entrance tests. The problems that arise in the study of usage are not as great after one or two years in college in some cases, but in many cases there is no change, and, therefore, the problems are presented by all classes. The problem really begins before the students enter college, and it carries on through their college life. In order to make the study of usage more effective, this detailed study of the errors of each individual in a class of freshman agriculture students has been made.
The main purpose of this study may be set forth as: 1. To determine and analyze the weakness of Freshman college students in written composition. 2. To strengthen these weaknesses and improve the usage of Prairie View College freshmen, and ultimately in the improvement of the English of the student body at Prairie View.
