Abstract
During the last decade, the Social Studies have been the recipient or an abundance in popularity. Many significant changes have also taken place in educational though and practice. Not only have the ideas been modified and broadened concerning the materials of instruction and the methods of presenting such materials in the schools, but the purpose of education have also undergone various modification. It Is the purpose of the writer (l ) to present an account of the changes that have taken place in the social studies in the secondary schools, together with a brief evolutionary background of the studies,( 2) to suggest certain types of work that the superintendent with Social Studies training desires to have carried forward by social studies teachers; and (3) to indicate his opportunity in encouraging all his teachers to accept responsibility for making the social studies program effective and significant in the lives of boys and girls in the school and in the community. The method used by the writer is a combination of research and topical. The material was gathered by careful examination of periodicals, magazines, journals, manuscripts, and books. This material was secured at the W. R. Banks Library, located at Prairie View A & M College.
