Abstract
Basketball Ilke many other competitive sports has been constantly changed by either the addition of new rules or the modification of old rules. Basketball, today, is unquestionably one of America's fastest games. It is also one of the most difficult to officiate because of the comparatively small playing area, the rapid change from offense to defense and the prohibition of body contact. In few other gases is the officiating as difficult or demanding as in basketball. Good officiating is a requisite in basketball as the rules and officials determine the scoring to such a great extent.
In the past few years, there have been many incidents caused by officiating controversies In basketball. In some cases, officials have been wrong In others they have been correct. Right or wrong basketball officials deserve much better treatment from coaches and spectators. It Is thought that a better understanding of rules and controversial play situations, by all concerned, might do much to improve the relationships between officials, coaches, and spectators.
