Abstract
Since industry started using mechanical power on large scale about 1900 and most of the major and important rail mileage of the country was in existence and is identified as part of the present system, I chose to give my attention to the period from 1900 to the present, however, placing emphasis upon consolidation since World War I.
One method employed in this study was a personal letter written and sent to the Association of American Railroads. Valuable information was received as follows: 1. Yearbook of Railroad Facts 2. Bulletin of Public Relation
This study also included general text books found in the W. R. Banks Library, Prairie View A. & M. College, Prairie View, Texas, Houston Public Library, Houston, Texas, Texas A. & M. Library, Bryan, Texas and San Diego Public Library, San Diego, California.
