Abstract
An important aspect and ever-present concern of the industrial arts department is the maintenance of helpful relationships between the school and community. Because of its struggle to be recognized and the many controversies involved in that struggle during its early history, shop work in the schools is constantly confronted with the need for giving careful attention to school and community relations. Also, the inherent character and methods of school shop instruction make it difficult for many teachers and administrators of other subject fields to appreciate its purposes, value, and requirements. Such lack of understanding often leads to unnecessary conflicts, and to indifference to the
standards and requirements of the industrial arts department. Furthermore, shop teachers and administrators also fail to appreciate the problem of other subjects fields and departments. Since the shop courses are in this peculiar position in many school programs of study, it is important that the best relationships shall be developed and maintained between the school and community.
