Curtis Augustus Thomas was a professor and University Registrar at PVAMU. Born in Lockhart, Texas on April 17, 1917, he attended school in the small town of Luling. In 1941, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education and economics from Sam Houston State University. Thomas served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1946 as an instructor for basic training, and he served in Europe for two and a half years in the 654th Army Ordinance Unit. After his discharge, he organized the Veterans Foreign War post in San Antonio, Texas and the Willie J. Williams Post of the American Legions in Luling, Texas.
He went on to earn a master’s degree from PVAMU, and his master’s thesis focused on the Rosenwald School system in Luling. He taught at Luling High School and the Williamson County School system. Later, he served as principal of Carver High School in Midland, Texas before joining the faculty at PVAMU. Thomas died on January 7, 1990, and he is buried in Prairie View Memorial Garden Cemetery.
