The equestrian figure became an image of power, human mastery over nature, and success in war and hunting. The horse rider stands in juxtaposition with another prominent theme in the art in the Dogon or Tellem culture.

The Dogon are an ethnic group located mainly in the districts of Bandiagara and Douentza in Mali, West Africa.
