Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find what methods and material will contribute most to putting over an effective reading program in a limited time, as stated in the introduction, and to offer suggestions for the correction of reading deficiencies. It is also the purpose of this study to present this information in a concise form that will be available to those teachers who are interested in the reading program of Coles School.

The information and facts on this study were obtained from the results of reading tests. The tests that were given were: (1) Pintner-Cunningham Primary tests administered by a teacher. (2) Test Type II (Reading Readiness). This test was administered by the writer. (3) The Standardized Gray's Oral Reading Test was administered by the writer. The mental test was given to 34 fourth grade pupils, 14 pupils were eliminated and 20 pupils were given the three tests. Six were given the second test of the Gray's Standardized reading test. (4) Data were also obtained from observations, books and periodicals dealing with reading difficulties and treatment, and the cooperation of teachers in the Coles School and information through background study and conferences with pupils.
