Abstract

This program is planned to meet, as nearly as possible, the individual abilities and interests of the pupils of the eighth grade. It offers an opportunity for choice of materials and for correlation of subject matter from other fields of study. The activities suggested are intended to make work in English applicable to life situations. Provision has been made for the development of the thinking of the students through oral and written composition.

The guiding principle and materials used are in keeping with the trend of modern methods of teaching and language arts in elementary schools. The idea was gotten from a course in language arts taken at Prairie View A&M College, during the summer session of 1947. The work is planned for the eighth grade of the Douglass elementary school, Mexia, Texas.
